Welcome
Welcome to Life Skills! I am very excited to be teaching this middle school specials class. Each grade level will be focusing on their own particular Life Skill set, which builds into the complete program from 6th grade to 7th grade to 8th grade. Therefore, when the students complete their education at Ben Franklin Academy, they will have the academic foundation, but will also have the necessary foundation for Life Skills.
6th grade will focus on self-discovery, which includes developing the skills for success (learning styles, accountability, and goals), building character, personal wellness, dealing with stress, conflict resolution, and understanding relationships (family, peers, teachers, etc.). Other topics explored by the 6th grade is human development, which includes understanding the stages of development from birth to adulthood, family basics (culture and traditions), childcare (babysitting), and community connections.
7th grade will take a more domestic approach in learning about their place in the family and consumer world. Practical living takes the approach that this age group should be able to master the basics of consumer awareness, technology, nutrition, meal planning, cooking basics, clothing management (choosing and care), ironing, personal environment, and personal health and hygiene. An exciting part of the 7th grade curriculum is learning to sew. The students will take away the knowledge of how to sew on a button, sew a hem, as well as a seam, with the culminating project of sewing a pillow by hand.
8th grade will prepare the students for their next steps in their life. These students are at the point where they need to understand the basic concepts of financial management, such as financial planning, money management (planning a budget, debit vs. credit, and financial literacy), consumer awareness. They will also explore career preparation and planning, managing the job search, career success, and career satisfaction. College preparation is also part of the 8th grade experience, which means deciding upon a college, how and when to apply, and what to expect. We will also find some time to explore basic vehicle maintenance such as changing a tire.
